Caro dottor De Florio,
ieri al mercatino ho acquistato una sola moneta; gliela mando, confidando in una sua ennesima fantastica analisi. Ho cercato di catalogarla, veda lei, dottore... o se devo iniziare a collezionare tappi di bottiglie!

P.S.: Nell'ipotesi che la mia attribuzione sia corretta, mi potrebbe spiegare, dottore, come si "legge" precisamente, in questo caso, la tavola del RIC I a pag. 99? Le spiego. Sono andato a consultare il volume: la moneta sembra essere quella catalogata al nr. 81 del primo volume ed. riveduta 1984 (pag. 99), indice di rarità "C". 
Ma anche la moneta precedente, ossia la nr 80, catalogata con un indice di rarità R4, sembra essere la stessa. Qual è, nel RIC, la differenza fra le due monete? Come interpreto in colonna "OBV." 1A e 1B? La 1A ha un altro diritto? Ed aventualmente dov'è descritto? Scusi, ma non avendo dimestichezza col testo, non riesco ad essere meno contorto.

di monete tipologicamente identiche alla sua mi sono occupato a più riprese in questa rubrica, anche recentemente; non mi resta che riprendere dall'ultima di queste (v. link) i dati  raccolti adattandoli al caso in esame:

Asse1, zecca di Roma, RIC I 81 (pag. 99)2, BMC I 146 (pag. 141), C I 228 (pag. 94), 22/23÷30 d. C., indice di rarità "C".

Descrizione sommaria (sono indicate in rosso le parti di leggenda usurate o comunque non più leggibili):
D. DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER3 in senso orario a partire da sinistra in basso. Augusto, testa radiata di a sinistra.

Concludo osservando che la moneta presenta caratteristiche fisiche e di stile che non si discostano da quelle dei conî d'epoca. Il suo valore venale non dovrebbe verosimilmente superare i 30,00€.

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche dell'asse di figura comunicate dal lettore (10,46g, 25-26mm, 2h) rientrano nei margini di variabilità dei conî d'epoca.
(2) Il RIC a pag. 99 fornisce, per la moneta in esame (RIC 81) la seguente descrizione:
  • Obv (dritto) 1B;
  • Rev (rovescio) S C ...
Per sapere cosa vuol dire 1B, basta andare in fondo alla pagina 98 dove si legge: 
  • Obv legends (leggende del dritto): 1 = "DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER";
  • Obv heads (teste del dritto): B = "Augustus radiated l." (Augusto, testa radiata a sinistra). 
Viceversa, se, a parità del resto, la testa della sua moneta fosse stata a destra, la catalogazione corretta sarebbe stata RIC 80 (1A), con A="Augustus, radiated r." cioè Augusto, testa radiata a destra.
(3) DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER. Il Mattingly sostiene che la moneta sia stata coniata sotto Tiberio (14÷37 d. C.), probabilmente nell'ultimo periodo del suo regno, per onorare la memoria del padre adottivo, l'imperatore Augusto. Di qui la parola "PATER" che allude probabilmente al titolo di "PATER PATRIAE" di cui il defunto era stato onorato in vita. Il dritto della moneta riproduce verosimilmente il ritratto di Augusto nella statua che Tiberio e Livia avevano fatto erigere in suo onore nei pressi del teatro Marcello. La testa radiata dell'imperatore, mutuata dal culto del dio Sole dei re d'Egitto e di Siria, comincia ora ad apparire sulle monete imperiali. Si ricorderà in proposito che lo stesso Augusto aveva fatto erigere due obelischi al Sole, il 10 a. C., al Circo e al Campo Marzio.
(4) S. C. (Senatus Consulto, "per decreto del Senato") era la consueta sigla apposta sui nominali in bronzo romani (sesterzi, dupondi e assi) ad indicare la competenza esclusiva del Senato Romano nelle decisioni attinenti alle emissioni di quelle monete (la monetazione in oro e in argento, che non riporta quella sigla, rientrava invece nelle competenze dirette dell'imperatore).
(5) L'altare costituisce un riferimento diretto al culto di Augusto deificato. La leggenda "PROVIDENT" (da "providentia", previdenza) in esergo va intesa come allusione alla saggezza e alla vista lunga dello scomparso. Il rovescio della moneta rappresenta il recinto e la porta d'accesso pannellata ad un altare. Più che fiammelle, gli oggetti rappresentati in alto a d. e a s. del recinto, sono probabilmente corni d'altare.
