vorrei approfittare di una sua consulenza a riguardo di una moneta romana di Antonino Pio di cui allego tre foto autorizzandone l'uso incondizionato.

Descrizione sommaria (sono indicate in rosso le parti della leggenda usurate o comunque non più leggibili):

R. LIBERALITAS AVG VII IMP VIII COS III PP. S C a sinistra e a destra in basso nel campo. La Liberalitas, drappeggiata, in piedi di fronte, testa a sinistra, sorregge con la mano destra un abaco e con la sinistra una cornucopia4.

Following his success in the First Marcomannic War and his suppression of Avidius Cassius, Marcus Aurelius returned to Rome for the first time in eight years. While there, he appointed his son, Commodus, as co-Augustus and on 23 December AD 176 celebrated a joint triumph over the Germans and the Sarmatians, at which time the distribution, commemorated on this sestertius, occurred. This time in Rome was to be his last, for in AD 177, the treaty with the Germans was broken by the Quadi, and Marcus was compelled to return to the front. The following lot (lot 1123), which proclaims his safe journey from the front and back again, is particularly ironic: Marcus never again would return from the front, save for the return of his ashes for burial in the Mausoleum of Hadrian, and Rome would experience the erratic and maniacal rule of Commodus.

Concludo osservando che, per quanto consentito ad un esame a distanza, le caratteristiche fisiche, l'aspetto generale e lo stile della moneta appaiono non dissimili dai campioni autentici d'epoca. Nello stato in cui si trova, il valore venale della moneta, se autentica, potrebbe collocarsi, a mkio avviso, attorno ai 40,00€.

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche del sesterzio di figura comunicate dal lettore (22g, 31mm) non si discostano in misura sostanziale da quelle delle monete d'epoca. L'asse di conio (6h) andrebbe verificato.
(2) La presenza nel dritto dell'indicazione del numero della potestà tribunizia (XXXI) consente di datare esattamente la moneta.
(3) M ANTONINVS AVG - GERM SARM TR P XXXI (Marcus ANTONINVS AVGustus GERManicus SARMaticus TRibunicia Potestate XXXI (Marco Antonino Augusto Germanico Sarmatico, per la 31.ma volta investito dei poteri di tribuno). Per una sintesi biografica su Marco Aurelio rimando alle pagine di http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Aurelio. Dopo il successo nella prima guerra marcomannica e la soppressione di Avidio Cassio, Marco Aurelio tornò a Roma per la prima volta dopo otto anni. Mentre era lì, nominò suo figlio, Commodo, co-Augusto e il 23 dicembre 176 d.C. celebrò un trionfo congiunto sui Germani e sui Sarmati, in coincidenza con l'elargizione, commemorata su questo sesterzio. Questa sarebbe stata la sua ultima discesa a Roma, poiché nel 177 d.C. il trattato con i Germani fu rotto dai Quadi e Marco fu costretto a tornare al fronte, da cui sarebbero tornate solo le sue ceneri per la sepoltura nel Mausoleo di Adriano, dopo di che Roma avrebbe sperimentato il governo incostante e maniacale di Commodo.
(4) LIBERALITAS AVG VII IMP VIII COS III PP (LIBERALITAS AVGusti VII IMPerator VIII COnSul III Pater Patriae) (settima Liberalità di Augusto, generale vittorioso all'ottava acclamazione, Console per la terza volta, Padre della Patria). Simbolo della Liberalità è l'abaco, lo strumento che nell'antichità serviva a fare i conti e, in questo caso, dava il valore corretto di ciò che era  dovuto a ciascun destinatario dell'elargizione.
