patina. With the death of Hadrian's heir, Aelius
Caesar, on New Year's Day, AD 138, Antoninus was
adopted as the new successor and ascended the
imperial throne on July 10. The coinage of
Antoninus' reign was issued not only in the
emperor's name but also in that of his wife,
Faustina Senior, the Caesar Marcus Aurelius, and
Pius’ daughter, Faustina Junior, who married
Aurelius in 145. This exceptional copper as is
dated by the years of Antoninus' tribunician
power (TR P XII) to the 12-month period
beginning 10 December 148 AD. The reverse
depicts an elephant, clad in some kind of
ornamental covering, accompanied by an
inscription proclaiming the emperor's liberality
(Munificentia Augusti). The reference is to the
staging of wild beast shows in the arena of the
Amphitheatrum Flavium, better known today as the
Colosseum, on the occasion of the celebration of
Rome's 900th anniversary in 147/148 AD.

Ex Tony Hardy Collection (Classical Numismatic
Group 69, 8 June 2005), lot 1627. The depiction
of an elephant harnessed in armor evokes the
image of a benevolent emperor in that he is the
giver of spectacles (munera) to the people in
the form of such displays of wild beasts. Though
Pius held many celebrations, this particular
event could allude to the Ludi Saeculares held
in AD 148.

Concludo osservando che le caratteristiche fisiche,
generali e di stile del campione in esame sono
assimilabili a quelle delle monete d'epoca reperite
nel web. Nel presente stato di conservazione, il
valore venale della moneta potrebbe aggirarsi sui 50
euro.

TRibunicia Potestate XII). Antonino Pio fu
investito per la 12.ma volta dei poteri di
tribuno il 10 dicembre del 148 e questo consente
di datare la moneta di figura a partire da

(3) MVNIFICENTIA
• AVG
(MVNIFICIENTIA AVGusti). Questo eccezionale
esemplare in rame è datato dagli anni del potere
tribunizio di Antonino (TR P XII) al periodo di
12 mesi che inizia il 10 dicembre 148 d.C.. Il
rovescio raffigura un elefante, rivestito da un
qualche tipo di ornamento, accompagnato da
un'iscrizione che proclama la liberalità
dell'imperatore (Munificientia Augusti). Il
riferimento è alla messa in scena di spettacoli
di belve nell'arena dell'Anfiteatro Flavio, oggi
meglio conosciuto come Colosseo, in occasione
dei festeggiamenti per i 900 anni di Roma nel
147/148 d.C..
(4) COS IIII/S C
(COnSul IIII/Senatus Consulto) Tra le novità
introdotte da Augusto nella monetazione è da
ricordare il conferimento al Senato della
responsabilità delle emissioni monetali in
bronzo; ogni emissione enea riportava perciò sul
rovescio la sigla SC (Senatus Consulto, "per
decreto del Senato"). La monetazione d'oro e
d'argento, che era priva della sigla SC,
rientrava nella competenza diretta
dell'imperatore. Si noterà che non incide sulla
classificazione della moneta il posizionamento
della sigla SC nel mezzo piuttosto che in basso
nel campo. |
