background FAUSTINA major (+141). Consecration of
Antoninus Pius. Faustina mother, daughter of
Rupilia Faustina, Hadrian's sister-in-law, married
Antoninus Pius between 110 and 115 and had at
least two children: Marcus Galerius Antonius, a
boy who died in infancy and young Faustina who
married Marcus Aurelius. Faustina mother receives
the title of augusta in 139 and is therefore
associated with coinage. She died in 141, aged
about forty. Antonin immediately had her deified
and struck an important coinage of consecration,
establishing the "Puellæ Faustinianæ" for young
orphans or poor. Antoninus will raise the Temple
of Faustina in the region of the Temple of Peace
(Regio IV).

I conclude by noting that the general and stylistic
characteristics of the sample under examination appear
comparable with those of period coins of the same
type. Physical characteristics are lacking and a
comparative examination with authentic coins of the
period is not possible. In its present state of
preservation, the coin, if authentic, has, in my
opinion, a market value of no more than EUR 10.
Best regards.

In the absence of the physical characteristics of
the sample mentioned above, it will not be possible
to carry out a comparative examination with
authentic coins of the period.
(2) DIVA FAV-STINA. The coin
offers no elements for dating, one can only say that
it was minted post-mortem of Faustina, thus after
141, when the Roman Senate decreed her apotheosis.
Stevenson reports (see link) that Anna Galeria
Faustina, who went down in history as Faustina
Maggiore (or Faustina Madre), was born in Rome in
105 AD, during the reign of Trajan. She was the
daughter of Annio Vero, a man of consular rank,
prefect of Rome and paternal grandfather of Marcus
Aurelius (see family tree by clicking here). Having
married Antoninus Pius before his accession, she
received the title of Augusta from the Senate
shortly after Hadrian's death, when Antoninus was
given the title of Pius. She died in the third year
of her husband's reign (AD 141), at the age of 36.
Antoninus Pius showed great devotion to his deceased
wife, venerating her memory. This is evidenced by
the vast commemorative coinage in her name, which
can be explained, however, not only by affection for
her passing, but also by the political design to
reinforce in the minds of contemporaries the idea of
the eternity of the Empire through the persons of
the Augusti and Auguste, reigning while alive and
deified when dead. Faustina had two sons and two
daughters, the most famous of which was Faustina
Minor who went on to marry Marcus Aurelius, her
first cousin. Several portraits are preserved of
Faustina the mother, with her typical hairstyle
(high bun of plaits on the top of her head). Her
memory was entrusted to the beneficial institution
of the puellae Faustinianae, desired by Antoninus
for orphan girls, and to the large temple still
standing on the Via Sacra (v.
link).
(3) AVGV-STA. The character
depicted on the reverse of the coin is the goddess
Ceres, recognisable by the ears of wheat.
