COMMENTAIRE Quinquennalia de la construction du temple de Faustine (142-147). HISTORIQUE FAUSTINE MÈRE (+141) Annia Galeria Faustina Consécration d'Antonin le Pieux. Faustine mère, fille de Rupilia Faustina, la belle-sœur d'Hadrien, épousa Antonin le Pieux entre 110 et 115 et eut au moins deux enfants: Marcus Galerius Antonius, un garçon qui mourut en bas âge et Faustine jeune qui épousera Marc Aurèle. Faustine mère reçoit le titre d'augusta en 139 et se trouve de ce fait associée au monnayage. Elle meurt en 141, âgée d'une quarantaine d'années. Antonin la fait immédiatement déifier et fera frapper un important monnayage de consécration, instituant les "Puellæ Faustinianæ" pour les jeunes orphelines ou pauvres. Antonin fera élever le temple de Faustine dans la région du temple de la Paix (Regio IV). Juste après la mort de Faustine un sesterce représentant son char funèbre fut frappé à l'occasion de la dédicace du temple de la Divine Faustine sur le Forum.

COMMENTAIRES SUR L'ÉTAT DE CONSERVATION: Monnaie légèrement décentrée au droit, avec un très joli buste détaillé de l’impératrice au droit. Patine grise. RÉFÉRENCE OUVRAGE: C.165 - RIC.382 b - BMC/RE.467 - RSC.165 a - RCV.4593 (160$) - MRK.36 /32-1 - H.1/735. AVERS Titulature avers: DIVA - FAVSTINA. Description avers: Buste drapé de Faustine mère à droite avec les cheveux relevés, coiffés en chignon (L). Traduction avers: “Diva Faustina”, (Divine Faustine). REVERS Titulature revers: CONS-E-C-RATIO. Description revers: Cérès debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant une longue torche de la main gauche. Traduction revers: “Consecratio”, (Consécration). COMMENTAIRE Pour le type avec Cérès, nous avons deux types dans le classement de P. V. Hill (H.1/ 735 et 764). Le premier est frappé dans le cadre de la vingtième émission du classement pour la sixième officine et correspond à la description de notre exemplaire. Le second est frappé à l’occasion du cinquième anniversaire de la dédicace du temple de Faustine mère en 142. Tous sont frappés en 147.
Concludo osservando che le caratteristiche generali e di stile della moneta non si discostano da quelle delle monete d'epoca di pari tipologia. Mancano le caratteristiche fisiche, ragione per cui non è possibile l'esame comparativo con le monete autentiche del periodo. Nelle presenti condizioni, se autentica, la moneta potrebbe, a mio avviso, valere una trentina di euro.

(1) Denario (argento, grado di fino 850‰). Secondo BMC IV, il denario di Antonino Pio pesava 3,23g (media su 783 esemplari). Raccolgo in tabella le caratteristiche fisiche dei denari della tipologia di figura tratte dai link di cui sopra:

In assenza di elementi sulle caratteristiche fisiche della moneta in esame, non sarà possibile svolgere una comparazione con i dati in tabella.
(2) Dopo il 141 d. C. è la datazione assegnata a questa emissione da Ric III, pag. 69; tra il 141 e il 147, quella indicata dal link.
(3) DIVA - FAVSTINA. Riferisce lo Stevenson (v. link) che Anna Galeria Faustina, passata alla storia come Faustina Maggiore (o Faustina I o Faustina Madre), nacque a Roma nel 105 d.C., sotto il regno di Traiano. Era figlia di Marco Annio Vero, uomo di rango consolare, prefetto di Roma, nonno paterno di Marco Aurelio (v. albero genealogico cliccando qui). Avendo sposato Antonino Pio quando era ancora un privato cittadino, ricevette dal Senato il titolo di Augusta poco dopo la morte di Adriano, quando Antonino fu investito del titolo di Pio. Ella morì nel terzo anno di regno del marito (141 d.C.), all'età di 36 anni. Faustina ebbe due figli e due figlie di cui la più famosa è Faustina Minore che andò sposa a Marco Aurelio, suo cugino di 1° grado. Di Faustina madre si conservano varî ritratti con la tipica acconciatura (alta crocchia di trecce sulla sommità del capo). Il suo ricordo fu affidato alla benefica istituzione delle puellae Faustinianae, creata da Antonino per le fanciulle orfane, e al grande tempio ancora oggi esistente sulla Via Sacra.
(4) Faustina Maggiore portava i capelli raccolti sopra la testa, a differenza della figlia Faustina Minore che viene di solito rappresentata con uno chignon dietro la testa.
(5) CON-SE-CRATIO (apoteòsi, deificazione, che con il cristianesimo diventerà "ascensione"). L'apoteòsi è rappresentata attraverso la figura ambivalente di Cerere, dea delle messi e della fecondità, ma anche dolorosa dea degli inferi che attraversa con la sua fiaccola.
