I would like to conclude by noting that, as far as a
remote assessment allows, the coin shown here presents
general characteristics and style not dissimilar to
those of the authentic dies found on the web. In the
absence of the physical characteristics, a comparative
examination with authentic coins of the period will
not be possible. In its present state of preservation,
if authentic, the coin could, in my opinion, be worth
c. 150€.
Best regards.

Ric, the axes of the type under consideration have
a weight of (11.50÷10.00)g and the
die axis is mostly at 12 o'clock. I collect

Since the physical characteristics of the sample
under examination are not available, it will not be
possible to conduct a comparative examination with
authentic coins of the period.
(2) NERO CAESAR AVG GERM IMP (NERO
CAESAR AVGustus GERmanicus IMPerator). The absence
of the small globe at the apex of the bust allows
the coin to be attributed to the Rome mint. The type
of the obverse above was struck several times,
introducing some variants. The coin under
consideration, which belongs to the series in which
IMP is used in the titling as cognomen, was struck,
according to RIC, until the end of AD 66 (see Ric I,
p. 154).
(3) PACE PR VBIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT
(PACE Populi Romani VBIQue PARTA IANVM CLaVSIT -
secured peace for the Roman people everywhere,
closed the Temple of Janus). A suggestive hypothesis
(RIC I, p. 140) would have it that the type under
consideration was struck on the occasion of King
Tiridates' visit to Rome in the year 65 AD.
Suetonius (Nero 13) in fact reports the following:
"‘I can reasonably include among Nero's scenic
inventions the entry of Tiridates into the Urbe.
This was the king of Armenia, induced by the
emperor, after great promises, to come to Rome;
and as, because of bad weather, it had not been
possible to welcome him in public on the chosen
day, this was done afterwards on a more favourable
occasion, by deploying the praetorian armed
cohorts around the temples of the Forum and Nero
sitting on a curule chair hoisted on the rostrums
like a victorious general, surrounded by the
military insignia and banners. As soon as the king
approached him on a sloping platform, Nero
initially let him prostrate at his feet and then,
offering him his right hand, made him stand up and
kiss him. Then, as the king made a supplication to
him, Nero lifted the tiara he wore on his head and
replaced it with a diadem, while a praetorian
official translated the words of the supplicant
and communicated them to the onlookers. From there
the king was taken to the theatre [ of Pompey the
Great ] and when the king had repeated the bow,
Nero seated him on his right. For all this Nero
received the acclamation of victorious general
(Imperator) and after laying a laurel wreath on
the Capitol [which was normal when celebrating a
triumph], he closed the gates of the temple of
Janus, signifying that no war was now going on
anywhere.’"
(4) According to Livy, the
temple of Janus, which remained open in times of
war, was closed only once in the whole time between
the foundation of the city and the battle of Actium.
Under Augustus it remained closed three times.
(5) S C (Senatus Consulto - by
decree of the Senate) was the customary abbreviation
on Roman bronze nominals (sestertii, dupondi and
axes) to indicate the exclusive competence of the
Roman Senate in decisions concerning the issuance of
those coins (gold and silver coinage, which did not
bear that abbreviation, fell within the direct
competence of the emperor). |
